James Wimhurst

(1832-1903)

Wimhurst developed and named a machine that was used for years to study static electricity. The Wimhurst machine employed metal sectors attached to glass discs which rotated in opposite directions multiplying electrical charges. Charges were collected in Leyden jars, an early type of capacitor or conductor.
