Alessandro Volta
(1745-1827)

Count Volta experimented with electricity and its possible storage. He perfected the dry cell battery in 1800. The volt, a unit of electricity, is named in his honor.

Dry cell batteries consist of a metal rod, called a cathode, surrounded by an electrolyte paste. Chemical reactions create the electricity that powers your flashlight and radio.
